It’s in line with the national primary curriculum. It helps children master fundamental movement skills. And it can be transformative in its impact on a child’s physical, emotional, cognitive and social development.
And yet gymnastics is barely covered in initial teacher training.
As a result, it’s seen as a difficult and dangerous sport to teach, with teachers left apprehensive about delivering lessons.
But with the developmental benefits it offers, gymnastics is an essential component of the primary curriculum.
So how do you move from fearing the sport to making it one of your favourite to teach?
With this brand new course from Ryan Bradley, former international gymnast and founder and director of RB Gym & Sport.
What will you learn?
The course gives you the skills, knowledge and confidence to plan, teach and assess primary gymnastics.
It’s broken down into three modules. Module 1 focuses on KS1 gymnastics skills and progressions, Module 2 covers KS2, and Module 3 looks at advanced gymnastics skills, enabling you to challenge your higher-ability pupils.

Chatting to Ryan, he explained the motivation behind setting up RB Gym & Sport, and why he’s developed this new online course.
“As an elite international gymnast performing on the world stage and being awarded a bronze Commonwealth medal, I had the opportunity of visiting many schools around the country inspiring children to participate in gymnastics. Throughout these visits, it became obvious that gymnastics was an area that needed further development, not only for children, but for teaching staff who showed a lack of confidence and knowledge to teach a skill-based gymnastics curriculum.
“On retiring from gymnastics, I founded RB Gym & Sport with the aim of increasing the quality of teaching gymnastics and physical education in schools. Since 2003, we’ve been delivering gymnastics in primary schools and educational settings, supporting schools, teachers and children to become more confident, knowledgeable and improve their gymnastics performance.
“As a qualified British Gymnastics tutor and assessor, combined with over 18 years of teaching experience within schools, supported by a team of educational experts, we have been able to create a bespoke, professional development programme designed for primary school teachers.
“Our philosophy and vision for primary school gymnastics is that children should be taught an enriched skill-based curriculum. It should have a strong focus on developing advanced fundamental and specific gymnastics elements with clear progression through primary school, which will promote greater understanding, creativity, confidence and engagement.
“The key intentions of this online course are for you to develop your knowledge and understanding of primary gymnastics skills and progressions, to increase your confidence and ability to teach and physically support gymnastics elements, and to develop your planning and assessment of gymnastics in your primary school.
“In achieving these intentions, our vision is that you will gradually develop and show more confidence in delivering high-quality gymnastics lessons across KS1 and KS2, feel a greater sense of enjoyment towards teaching gymnastics, and most importantly, support the development of physically competent and confident pupils with exceptional fundamentals, which will encourage progression in all areas of the PE curriculum.”
